More than 30 million Americans proudly claim Irish heritage today and among them are some of of America’s greatest heroes (such as Walt Disney or JFK). However, when the Irish first arrived en masse to the USA they were not welcome and faced severe discrimination and hardship in their new home.
They were America’s first refugees, fleeing a famine that killed upwards of one million people. Most of the new arrivals were poor, desperate and hungry.
